Greg has spent the last decade successfully managing finance and special projects for all manner of organizations.   He has a proven track record of success working for multi-billion dollar organizations and also small organizations.   His management philosophy is focused not only towards delivering results but also improving processes and systems along the way so that success is lasting and repeatable.

 

Greg has significant experience in pension plan management, investments, performance auditing, compliance, tax planning and financial attestation engagements. Since April 2014 he has been the CEO of the Santa Barbara County Employees' Retirement System. During this time, he has led the System's efforts at improving investment performance and plan compliance.  Demonstrated successes include SBCERS being the second highest returning California county pension plan for the year ended June 30, 2016. Greg also led the successful completion of the System's voluntary compliance filing with the Internal Revenue Service.

 

Greg's past demonstrated successes in compliance and financial reporting include leading the team responsible for correcting the financial reporting deficiencies and improving internal control at the City of San Diego. His leadership led to issuing 4 years of past due financial statements and contributed greatly toward returning the City to public bond markets.

Greg also has significant experience in tax planning, investment stewardship and estate planning through his work with foundations and non-profits.  Specifically, he has overseen the management and investment of an over $100 million dollar endowment portfolio during the market turmoil of the late 2000’s.  During this time, despite the tumultuous market conditions, the Foundation portfolio was at the top of its peer group when measuring portfolio return.  He also has substantial experience structuring philanthropic gifts to maximize tax advantages and working with organizations to ensure that donor wishes are honored. 

 

Beyond the traditional responsibilities of an accountant, Greg has successfully managed entrepreneurial finance projects throughout his career.  These diverse projects include working with government to develop economic incentives designed increase tourism investment and creating financial products to enable homeowners to borrow funds to improve the energy efficiency and save on utility costs. Greg also has significant experience working in the area of affordable housing finance, redevelopment and urban management.
